Balls

Napoleon’s Balls
» There are several cannon balls wedged into the walls of several houses in the Old Town. These balls are from the Napoleonic era. Supposedly, they were marking the houses which were damaged after Napoleon “paid his visit” and they were entitled to tax reliefs. I am not sure if I remember all of them, but here’s a short list: 1. Yellow church, Nám. SNP – to the left of one of the entrances – height 2m 2. Tower of the Town Hall – looking from Hlavné square – to the left of the window – height approx. 6 – 7m 3. Corner of the house at Františkánske nám. 9 – height 3m (a very small ball) 4. Facade of the Apponyi’s Palace near Hlavné sq. – to the right of the fifth window from the left – height 5m 5. Sedlárska – above the Barrock, between third and fourth window from the left – height 7m 6. Michalská 6 – to the right of the second window from the left – height approx. 7m 7. Michalská 3 – in the courtyard – to the right of the gutter 8. House next door (green) – to the left of the second window – height approx. 6m 9. Michalská 12 – by the entrance, to the left of the first shopping display 10. Beblavého 12 (I think) – towards the castle, on the right, above one of the last entranceways. «
